To the Wonderful Supporters of the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center,
We hope that you are having a great summer! We thrilled to share with you an email from John Kabot, our Behavioral Specialist and Camp Director regarding our incredible Camp Kehilla here at the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center. This unique camping experience for children with developmental disabilities offers children an on-site, true day camp experience with an overnight option for additional respite. This dream for families could not have been possible without your love and support. Please read below, a glimpse into Week 1, with our thanks.
End of Week 1 Observations:
We had an absolutely incredible first week of camp. We have had calls from parents saying that their children are requesting foods they've never eaten before and are using whole sentences to request that food even though they don't usually use whole sentences. We have had a camper make significant progress on his toilet training program with us. We had a very challenging child wake up at 4:30 today and wake up his sister and ask her to put his shorts on so he could go to camp. Marci has gotten some amazing feedback during her time at carpool from parents I'm sure she will share. We already are having parents request to lock up their spots for next year. The feedback has been incredible.
Some of my favorite time at camp has been watching our staff with the kids. I have seen two girls "fly" their kites from art who have bonded and have now become “best friends”. I saw one camper help another camper who relies on a walker to their next activity. I've seen children run out of the car to greet staff in the morning. I've gotten to see our teens have an amazing time playing soccer.
All of this would not have been possible without our staff that has been above and beyond. I've watched one of our trained staff change a camper with such care it looks like he's working with his son. I've been lucky enough to watch many of our incredible staff work tirelessly with a really challenging child and never complain. The staff has done everything asked of them and done it with smile. They pitch in and do whatever it takes.
We are making a real difference in these families lives and this is just week. Everyone involved in this project should be really proud of themselves. It has taken the whole Kehilla (community) to pull this off. I hope everyone has a well deserved restful weekend.
If you are in the area this summer, just let us know, we would love to have you come by to see for yourselves all of the wonderful things going on this summer!
Many thanks again for all that you do to help us…give every child a place to belong.
